Why the county layer is the hard one

Thousands of courts, no front door

The US has over three thousand counties, and criminal cases are filed court by court. There is no single place to ask "what exists about this person at the county level" — which is precisely the search that matters most.

Every portal is different

One county exposes a modern search; the next, a terminal-era index; a third, nothing online at all. Each has its own fields, its own name formats and its own quirks — and none of them talk to each other.

The layer that decides the answer

Misdemeanors and most felonies are county matters. A screen that skips the county layer can look clean while the record that mattered sits in a courthouse index two towns over.

What it does

Ask about a person once, and read the county layer the way the registry search already reads every US registry: one query, one consistent schema, each record naming the court that holds it. County results sit beside the state and federal layers so one search tells the whole story.

Can I search county criminal records here today?

Yes. The county layer is live and reaches more than a thousand county, state and federal jurisdictions — the largest of the three layers. Coverage is still expanding, so ask /v1/criminal/sources which counties are answering right now rather than assuming. Our sex offender registry search — 58 US registries, continuously updated — remains the original product and runs on the same key.

What are county criminal records, exactly?

The case records of county-level courts — where most US criminal matters are filed, heard and resolved. A typical record carries the defendant, the charges, the disposition and the sentencing, held by that county and traditionally searched at that county alone.

Which counties are covered?

Ask the API rather than trusting a page: GET /v1/criminal/sources lists every county jurisdiction we know about, each marked live or pending, with the age of its most recent update. Several hundred are queued and not yet answering, and that endpoint is the only honest answer to this question on any given day.

How are results delivered?

The intent is the shape the registry API already has: one consistent schema, every record citing the court it came from, callable from your system or searched from the dashboard by someone who never writes code.

Is this a consumer report?

No. Offendersearch is not a consumer reporting agency and results are not a consumer report. FCRA-covered decisions need appropriate process on your side — the same terms that govern every other endpoint.
